Sharold Oster earned a BS degree from North Dakota State University in 1964 and spent the next 20 years working on the family farm/ranch. In 1984 he returned to NDSU and in 1986 graduated with his MED in addiction counseling. He worked 19 years at the State Hospital in Jamestown as an inpatient addiction counselor and retired back to the family farm in 2006. Since his retirement he has held several part time positions as an addiction counselor and is presently employed as a part time addiction counselor here at Coal Country, where he performs evaluations, low intensity outpatient group and individual counseling.
He is a member of the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors and the North Dakota State Addiction Counselors Association. In 2011 the North Dakota Addiction Counselors Association and the North Dakota Addiction Treatment Coalition formally recognized him for his outstanding contributions to the addiction field in North Dakota. On a personal level, he has been in recovery since 1979 and continues to be actively involved with the local recovery community.
